About London

London is the UK’s only city region. Geographically it is the smallest of the English regions but it has one of the largest populations, containing 15 per cent of the population of England. Greater London is made up of 32 boroughs and the City of London and covers an area of 1,572 square kilometres.

More than 300 languages are spoken and 14 different religions practised in the capital and areas of wealth lie alongside some of the most deprived areas in the country, meaning the needs of communities in the region are great and varied.

Where we are based

The London team is based in BIG’s offices.

What we do

The population of London is over 7 million and this is reflected in the demand for Big Lottery funding from voluntary and community groups based in the capital.

The team:
  • monitors local socio-economic and funding data to identify communities most in need and help them to access relevant funding
  • gives decision-making committees the regional information they need to make informed decisions
  • develops relationships across London for a strong and appropriate impact on regional issues
  • helps grant holders publicise their success and generate support
  • helps projects to work together, create networks, and share expertise
  • informs MPs and councillors of funding successes and issues in their constituency
