Epworth Primary has finally achieved its vision of an outdoor learning zone. The original plans for the school built in 1982 featured an interactive outdoor area. Sadly, the area was never built and it wasn’t until a recent Awards for All grant of £9,990 that the area became a reality.
The new learning zone includes an outdoor amphitheatre where children can sit outside, enjoy story time, drama and host family learning activities. The zone also boasts a sail roof, a water feature powered by solar energy and raised planters to enable the pupils to grow their own produce.
Epworth Primary celebrated the opening of their new outdoor area with a Jubilee street party. The event started with the singing of the national anthem and a Jubilee picnic, followed by the official opening of the area by the Lord Mayor of North Lincolnshire, Ivan Glover.
John Hodgkins, Head teacher said: "The area is going to make a huge difference for the children. It’s going to provide us with an oasis of quiet, particularly for some of our more vulnerable children, who sometimes might need that space away from the noise of daily school life."
After a successful day of Jubilee celebrations, the event drew to a close with the pupils planting a tree to commemorate the day, which along with the new outside area will be enjoyed by many generations to come.
