BIG celebrations as Lottery's small grants roll out in East Mids

National Lottery grants ranging in size from £2,020 to £10,000 are being received by 53 community groups across the East Midlands today. The money, totalling over £435,000, comes from the Big Lottery Fund’s popular small grants scheme, Awards for All (see list of grants for projects in your area)

Awards for All offers grants of between £300 and £10,000 to social and environmental projects that will benefit local communities and make a difference to the lives of those most in need. Voluntary and community groups, schools, health organisations and parish and town councils can all apply.

Among those receiving grants today is the Dyspraxia Gym Group – Shepshed in Leicestershire which receives £8,480 to purchase equipment to run a fine motor skills group for children with Dyspraxia, a condition which affects coordination and movement. The group will then be able to run interactive games and craft activities and start an equipment lending library.

Meanwhile the Blaby and Whetstone Boys Club receives £9,526 to run an independence group for people with disabilities and youth club sessions for young people.

In Bolsover, Nottinghamshire, the Shirebrook Miners’ Welfare Centre will use £6,010 to purchase a 4x4 vehicle which will enable the group to continue their care for older people in adverse weather conditions, especially those living in rural areas.

And Disability Direct gets £7,230 to purchase recreational equipment for a relaxation area at their new activity centre for disabled people in Pride Park, Derby.

Elsewhere in the region people with disabilities and young people not in employment, education or training will benefit from a £9,930 grant to Carillon Radio in Leicester. The project will provide training and volunteering opportunities in radio broadcasting.

While Catmose Primary School, inspired by the Olympics, will use £9,038 to run exercise sessions for children and the wider community in Oakham, Rutland.

Other projects receiving grants today include: Nottinghamshire YMCA which gets £9,950 to run workshops using technology to communicate with other young people and YMCA groups around the world who have learning and behavioural difficulties; Compass Client Involvement Group in Leicester which receives £9,960 to deliver workshops on relaxation, arts, crafts, photography and healthy eating for peple with mental ill health; and Birchwood Access and Training Centre will use £9,842 to run a mobile summer holiday club for young people in Lincoln.
