Young people across the East Midlands are to gain skills to help improve their prospects of employment following news of a Big Lottery Fund roll out.
Some 42 projects in the East Midlands share grants today totalling £349,587 from BIG’s small grants programme Awards for All, including several enterprising ideas targeting young people in the region.
Shiefton Youth Group in Radford, Nottingham receives £9,970 to provide a range of activity sessions for young people not in education, employment or training, such as business start-up techniques, CV writing, creative writing and graphic design. This will help young people learn transferable life skills and improve their future employment prospects.
Darrell Redmond, Interim Director of Shiefton Youth Group, said: “Shiefton has been going for some 28 years, operating in a deprived area in Radford. We believe a number of young people will be able to access training programmes through these National Lottery funds which will support them and help them to develop their skills, ultimately moving them towards the world of work.”
Enterprise Education Foundation in Corby, Northamptonshire is awarded £9,859 to bring young people together to plan and deliver a mini project for the local community within a commercial setting. The young people will meet each other at a residential where they will discuss ideas about the commercial venture and will teach young people important skills such as planning and organising that will help bolster their employment credentials.
Other youth projects to secure funding today include BigBarn C.I.C., awarded £10,000 to run workshops to educate young people in Leicester about growing and selling food. The group will also aim to expand the project through website development and marketing in order to reach a wider audience. And Nottingham Media Centre Limited receives £9,040 to develop ideas for community improvement through engaging young people in social enterprise activities and documentary making.
A grant of £9,650 will enable Homes for the Homeless (Leicestershire) to provide practical, technical and team building skills through refurbishment work at one of its site buildings in Loughborough. This will enable homeless and vulnerably housed people to develop skills and further their employment opportunities, as well as providing a new amenity for homeless people.
Trent Bridge Community Sports Trust is awarded £10,000 to recruit and train volunteers to become health and physical activity champions for the Nottingham community. This will help promote healthy lifestyles, as well as increasing the future employment opportunities of the volunteers.
Mick McGrath, Big Lottery Fund Head of Region for the East Midlands, said: “Youth unemployment is a major concern in the East Midlands, so I am pleased to see projects that will help young people get on the right track for entering today’s tough job market benefit from National Lottery funding. BIG’s Awards for All programme shows how even small grants can make a big difference to people of all ages across the region.”
BIG’s Awards for All programme offers grants of between £300 and £10,000 to social and environmental projects that will benefit local communities and make a difference to the lives of those most in need. Voluntary and community groups, schools, health organisations and parish and town councils can all apply.
