East Midlands communities celebrate small grants success

Area:
East Midlands
Programme:
Awards for All England
Release date:
23 7 2012

Art workshops for young people and a local apprentice scheme for unemployed people are among 83 community projects across the East Midlands region celebrating a share of over £630,000 in National Lottery good causes cash today. The money comes from the Big Lottery Fund’s popular small grants scheme, Awards for All.

Awards for All offers grants of between £300 and £10,000 to social and environmental projects that will benefit local communities and make a difference to the lives of those most in need. Voluntary and community groups, schools, health organisations and parish and town councils can all apply.

Among those receiving grants today is Newark Sustrans Rangers in Lincolnshire which has secured £4,972 to run art workshops to bring together young people from both sides of the River Trent. Young people will work jointly to design and paint metal panels to enhance part of the national cycling route.

Meanwhile, Whitwick Community Coffee Shop in Leicestershire receives £10,000 to run an apprenticeship scheme for unemployed young people. The group hopes to be able to provide work experience and on the job knowledge so that young people can improve their life skills and chances of employment.

In Sleaford, Lincolnshire, the Tuxford Academy will use £9,505 to create a sensory garden for pupils with special needs and people in the community, while Billingborough Village Hall Committee receives £9,362 to refurbish a room and install gym equipment at their rural village hall for the community to use.

People in Oundle, East Northamptonshire, will be able to ‘have a go’ at bike fixing workshops thanks to £6,300. Oundle Transition Town Group will also run a series of bike lessons and trianing sessions including cycling proficiency.

And in Nottingham, Community Education Employment and Advice will use £9,910 to purchase IT equipment and provide training in computer systems and online services for the local community. This will help to boost the employability of those taking part.

Other projects receiving funding today include: Sports and Leisure Management Community Leisure Trust in Selston which will run dance sessions for younger children and their families with £10,000; Eau Community Centre in West Lindsey which will use £9,830 to run basic IT training sessions for the community; and Age Concern Lutterworth & District in Harborough, Leicestershire which will use £718 to run a community event to celebrate their 50th Anniversary year.

Mick McGrath, Big Lottery Fund’s Head of the East Midlands region, said: “This funding is fantastic news for community groups in the East Midlands today with such a broad range of projects sharing in over £630,000 worth of grants. These projects will reach many people in all corners of the region, such as unemployed young people, those with special needs, and others living in isolated communities, proving that even the smallest amount of money can make a big difference.”
