Programme:

Release date:
2 10 2012

A group in Newark has received a grant from the Big Lottery Fund to run a post natal depression pilot project

The grant is just one of 70 awards across the East Midlands today sharing £596,295 from the Big Lottery Fund’s most popular grants scheme - Awards For All. Awards For All gives small grants of up to £10,000 to projects that can make a big difference to people’s lives.

The post natal depression pilot project is being run by Home-Start Newark which receives £6,023 to help mothers and fathers living in the districts of Newark and Sherwood. The project will cover birth experiences, relationships, bonding, anxiety and relaxation. There will be sessions for fathers to give them a better understanding of the illness and how best to support their partners. The funding will also pay for new IT equipment and the development of the website to meet an increase in demand.

Carla Brown, Fundraiser and Community Developer for Home-Start Newark, said: ‘We’re absolutely delighted to receive the Awards For All grant. The Mums In Mind project is very close to our hearts and we know we can help make a difference to so many families suffering from the illness. It’s important to be open and talk about mental health issues, they affect more people than we think and support and understanding is the key to good recovery. The grant will also allow us to help more families in the area. We’re finding that issues affecting families are becoming more complex and we will be able to offer training and support to our volunteers that reflect those changes.”

Projects receiving funding for training include Phizzical Productions in Nottingham and Ladybrook Enterprise in Mansfield. The Nottingham group receives £9,900 to deliver an enterprise training programme in project management, event planning and ICT for local disadvantaged people young people to develop their life and employment skills.  The Mansfield charity will use its £5,209 grant to buy IT equipment to run a recruitment training day for unemployed local people to help with CV writing, the recruitment process and interview techniques.

Children with special needs will benefit from a £10,000 grant for play equipment at Farndon St Peter’s Church of England Primary School in Nottinghamshire including a water and sand table, ‘bat pipes’, a xylophone, blackboard and more.

Older people in Ockbrook, Derbyshire, will be able to take part in social activities to reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation. The Silvers Community Club receives £7,380 for activities involving sport and dance coaches and equipment.

Mick McGrath, Big Lottery Fund Head of East Midlands region, said: “It’s great to make so many awards to such varied projects and activities. We want to hear from more community groups in the East Midlands who might have an idea of how they could make a big difference to their community with an Awards For All grant.”
