Access to essential support and advice for residents of Lincoln and help towards a healthier life for people in Derbyshire are now on the cards following close to half a million pounds from the Big Lottery Fund today.
Lincoln and District Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) receives £299,720 to restart and further develop an information and advice outreach service for at least 850 residents in the most deprived and hard to reach areas of Lincoln.
Lincoln CAB will provide a new outreach service two days per week in the Abbey, Glebe, Moorland and Birchwood wards of the City. Specially trained advisor staff will provide guidance on a variety of topics including debt and money advice to improve financial difficulties and maximise income; employment advice on terms and conditions, redundancy, dismissal and harassment and relationship related advice including bereavement, family breakdown and benefits.
In the morning people will be able to walk into a walk-in triage service and meet with advisors who will help develop an individual plan of action. Afternoon sessions will be by appointment enabling people to attend at a time that meets their individual needs and availability.
Roy Trotter, Lincoln Citizens Advice Bureau Manager said: “The people of Lincoln will be thrilled to learn that Lincoln Citizens Advice Bureau has been successful with its funding request to the Big Lottery Fund. We will be able to provide outreach services again in four areas of the City where the need is greatest and where it is more needed, that is in the Abbey, Birchwood, Glebe and Moorland areas.
“We are doing all we can to support the City’s priority of reducing poverty and we trust that the outreach service will make a significant contribution to this.”
Receiving £197,544 from the Big Lottery Fund today is Derbyshire County Council for Jog Derbyshire to expand its successful fitness programme which already has 65 active groups with 1,800 members who meet and jog a number of times per week. The project will focus on engaging 200 new volunteer jog leaders reaching out to areas of Derbyshire which currently do not have a jog group. It is aimed at people over the age of 14 in Derby City, High Peak, Derbyshire Dales and North East Derbyshire. The project is hoping to reach people who are over 45 and currently not taking any form of exercise and more likely to be at risk of obesity, ill health and susceptible to chronic disease.
Margaret Blount, Deputy Director Derbyshire Sport said: “Jog Derbyshire has been a really successful project which has changed people’s lives. For some participants they can now jog 5k but for others the change has been far more significant. They can also jog 5k but they have lost weight, gained confidence, developed new friendships, increased their self esteem, been able and willing to take on new opportunities, some related to jogging, some in other aspects of their lives.”
People can find out how to get involved with Jog Derbyshire at www.activederbyshire.co.uk/jog or by calling 07584 569121 or 07584 493275.
Today’s funding comes from BIG’s Reaching Communities programme which aims to help those most in need and build stronger communities.
Mick McGrath, Big Lottery Fund Head of East Midlands region said: “Today’s Big Lottery Fund grant awards show the versatility of how Reaching Communities funding can make a difference to people’s lives whether it be much needed advice or support to become fitter and healthier at minimal cost. Community projects can find out more on how to apply for a share of Lottery funding at www.biglotteryfund.org.uk.”
