Holiday activities for deaf young people and a festival to celebrate the arrival of the Paralympic Torch are among 68 community projects across the East of England region celebrating a share of over £470,000 in National Lottery good causes cash today. The money comes from the Big Lottery Fund’s popular small grants scheme, Awards for All.
Awards for All offers grants of between £300 and £10,000 to social and environmental projects that will benefit local communities and make a difference to the lives of those most in need. Voluntary and community groups, schools, health organisations and parish and town councils can all apply.
Among those receiving money is Youth Unbranded CIC in Stevenage which receives £9,280 to provide holiday activities to deaf young people including ice skating and trips to an adventure park. The project will also teach peers British Sign Language to help improve communication between those with hearing problems and those who can hear.
Meanwhile, Optua (East Anglia) near Ipswich will use a grant of £7,480 towards its outdoor community festival celebrating the arrival of the Paralympic flame to Suffolk. The event will feature workshops, entertainers and performances. The festival will be fully inclusive and accessible, encouraging disabled people to attend and participate.
Also receiving funding today is Norfolk Disabled Parents Alliance which will use £9,920 to create a video to be screened on the group's website. The film will depict issues faced by parents who have disabilities. The video is designed to help disabled parents to see how others address their issues and day to day life situations, encouraging them to access assistance where necessary with the knowledge that they are not alone in their situation.
In Braintree, Essex, a grant of £6,020 will enable Braintree Emergency Night Shelter to deliver educational and trianing courses to people at their homeless shelter, while in Colchester, Autism Anglia will use £1,640 to buy new computer equipment for their Further Education Department.
A grant of £5,000 goes to Dunstable and District Aphasia Self Help Speakability Group in Luton to provide a coach holiday to Cumbria for people who have suffered strokes and their carers, and Higher Aims Foundation in Thurrock receiveds £10,000 to run an employment training programme for adults and young people.
Other projects receiving grants today include: Broadfield Primary School in Hemel Hempstead which receives £10,000 to install outdoor play equipment for children at the school; St John the Baptist Church PCC in Cambridgeshire which gets £10,000 to install a refreshment unit, mobile servery and plumbing at the church; and 1st Debenham Scout Group in Suffolk which will buy new camping equipment and train volunteers as leaders with its grant of £9,999.
Sara Betsworth, Big Lottery Fund’s Head of the East of England region, said: “It’s fantastic news for community groups in the East of England today with such a broad array of projects receiving funding. These grants will help so many people, such as those with disabilities, unemployed people and those who are recovering from stroke, and I am really pleased that our Awards for All funding continues to reach all corners of the region.”
