Big Lottery Fund brings greek torch relay to Haringey

Area:
London
Programme:
Awards for All England
Release date:
23 7 2012

As London prepares to kick off the Olympic party this week, children in Haringey will be taking a step closer to the spiritual home of the Games thanks to the Big Lottery Fund’s Awards for All programme.

The Greek Cypriot Women's Organisation has received £9,059 to run a four-week summer scheme for young people that will include a range of sports and learning activities, culminating in a torch relay on August 24.

Kyriaki Karatzaferi is organising the project. She said “We are looking to help children and families who can’t afford to go on holiday and who otherwise wouldn’t have anything to do over the long summer break. They will be making costumes and outfits during the weeks as we prepare for the final closing ceremony and torch relay. It’s going to be a lot of fun.’

The project is being supported by the Big Lottery Fund’s popular small grants scheme, Awards for All. A total of 108 projects in the capital are today sharing £942,716 in the latest round of awards.

Elsewhere in the capital, Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School in Merton has been awarded £9,950 to install a sensory room for children with behavioural and emotional needs that will improve the health and wellbeing for pupils who attend the school.

Meanwhile in Wandsworth, Noviha will use its grant of £9,742 to provide a drop-in centre and befriending service that will help isolated older people.

Alison Rowe, Big Lottery Fund’s Head of the London region, said: “These projects demonstrate how Awards for All is there to help everyone, from young school children to vulnerable elderly people. I am delighted to see Lottery funding being used in such diverse and positive ways.”

BIG’s Awards for All programme offers grants of between £300 and £10,000 to social and environmental projects that will benefit local communities and make a difference to the lives of those most in need. Voluntary and community groups, schools, health organisations and parish and town councils can all apply.
