Over £1million in Lottery good causes cash for Londoners

Area:
London
Programme:
Awards for All England
Release date:
20 2 2012

Over £1million in National Lottery good causes cash is being shared by 111 community groups in London today. The money comes from the Big Lottery Fund’s popular small grants scheme, Awards for All (see list of grants for projects in your area).

Projects serving a wide range of beneficiaries, including young people, those with disabilities, and people suffering from health problems, are among those sharing in the grants.

Parent Abuse and Reconciliation Service in Enfield receives £10,000 to support families affected by parental abuse at the hands of their adolescent children. Families will be able to access activities, workshops, counselling and employment training, helping them to improve family relationships.

In Islington, The Food Chain (UK) Limited will use their grant of £10,000 to train volunteers to act as nutrition mentors for people living with HIV. This will result in service users receiving prepared meals and nutrition counselling to improve their wellbeing. It will also result in more skilled volunteers for the charity, thus improving their service to the community.

A grant of £9,465 to the Forest Farm Peace Garden in Redbridge will enable the group to run a series of open days and workshops at their community garden. The project will promote locally grown food, gardening activities and wildlife awareness.

And the Royal London Society for the Blind receives £4,827 to set up a radio studio with wheelchair access, at their current offices in Westminster. This will enable blind and visually impaired beneficiaries to develop new skills and gain greater independence and self-confidence.

Alison Rowe, Big Lottery Fund’s Head of the London region, said: “Community groups across the Capital are working hard to improve the lives of Londoners, whether it’s providing much-needed support services, revamping local amenities or creating new volunteering opportunities. Time and again we see how a relatively small grant can make a real difference, which is why we are proud to be able to award over £1million in grants this month.”

BIG’s Awards for All programme offers grants of between £300 and £10,000 to social and environmental projects that will benefit local communities and make a difference to the lives of those most in need. Voluntary and community groups, schools, health organisations and parish and town councils can all apply. Visit www.awardsforall.org.uk or phone 0845 410 20 30 for more information.
