A Bolton based butterfly learning project is amongst North West schemes set to spread their wings after landing a piece of a £1m Awards for All funding pot, announced today.
Some 139 projects share in today’s funding from the Big Lottery Fund’s Awards for All small grants programme this month which aims to benefit local communities and make a difference to the lives of those most in need.
AWCA Project in Bolton receives £10,000 to provide a series of after school activities based around butterflies, including learning about the species, arts and crafts, computer animations and poetry. This will take place at Bolton's Animal World Park and Butterfly House at Moss Bank Park and other venues with multimedia provision. As well as providing free access to green spaces, the project aims to raise young people's aspirations and improve access to social activities.
Kate Porter, AWCA Project Chairperson, said: “The project will aim to engage Year 5 students who face barriers to learning and the activities carried out will support the raising of attainment and achievement. They will have the opportunity to engage with nature, express themselves creatively, as well as interact with computer technology to complete their multi-media project. Students from seven local Bolton primary schools will be involved, and AWCA project will be working with an expert lepidopterist and Bolton councils Playing for Success team to achieve their goals.”
In Stockport, some £9,500 will enable Worth It to deliver workshops and create a website on the subject of body image and eating disorders for secondary school children. This will help to promote a positive self image and help prevent eating disorders developing.
And Ivegill C of E School in Cumbria will use £2,250 to deliver sports coaching to pupils attending local schools, culminating in a mini event. This will encourage children and young people to develop sports and fitness skills as well as social skills.
Another project to receive funding today is New Freedom Counselling, awarded £9,960 to deliver alcohol and drug aftercare support in East Lancashire, using the 12 step recovery programme technique. This will help improve the self-esteem and confidence of recovering addicts to enable them to complete their recovery programme and reintegrate back into mainstream society.
Liverpool based B.A.P.T.A. is awarded £10,000 to establish a range of community activities including a befriending club for older people, IT and computer skills training, cultural outings, health awareness workshops and drop-in surgeries with local councillors. Merseyside Community Solutions CIC will use a £10,000 award to deliver training and therapy sessions, including cognitive behavioural therapy and neuro-linguistic programming, to unemployed people with mental health problems. And Exsel (Int) Community Interest Company receives £9,939 to expand its mattress recycling facilities to prevent waste from going to landfill. This will also provide unemployed people in Liverpool with work experience and new skills.
Helen Bullough, Big Lottery Fund Head of the North West region, said: “It’s good news for the North West today with a range of different projects receiving funding that will help people of all ages and backgrounds across the region. From initiatives to encourage children to enjoy nature and stay healthy to schemes that offer vital work experience opportunities and provide therapy support, I am really pleased that Awards for All funding continues to make such an important impact on improving lives.”
