Creative and cohesive Awards For All across South East

Area:
South East England
Programme:
Awards for All England
Release date:
20 2 2012

Homegrown filming initiatives produced by and broadcast to local people are two of the South East projects picking up a Big Lottery Fund grant today.

Seventy six projects across the region are sharing over £656,000 from BIG’s Awards for All programme, with many of the groups using their awards to encourage social cohesion and involvement.

With a grant of £8,476, Vision for Eastbourne will be able to provide a community television service for the Sussex coastal town, which will be run by and for local people. The broadcasts, which will be available to watch online, will also offer participants the opportunity to learn new media skills.

In a similar vein, Bootcamp in Wealden, East Sussex, will aim to offer housebound and isolated older people the opportunity to participate virtually in local events. They will use their £9,164 grant to produce films on such activities and community highlights, and distribute them to less mobile residents.

And Seaford Community Cinema in Seaford, East Sussex, which received £8,400, intends to establish a community cinema in this isolated coastal town. This will provide residents with a facility for recreational activities, as the town currently lacks such a venue.

Several projects will invite participants to discover their creative side. Members of the community will create a children’s book at Margate Theatre Royal Trust in Thanet. The project, which received £7,696, aims to bring diverse cultures together while exploring feelings and views held about the area. Using their grant of £8,950, Eastbourne-based Writing For Recovery will encourage individuals recovering from mental health problems to participate in creative writing as an aid to recovery. And Brightonshed receives £8,000, enabling artistic projects which explore social, economical and environmental issues with young people, such as through a music project specifically to engage young offenders.

Other projects receiving funding today include: Children’s cancer charity Freddysmile in Worthing, which will use their £10,000 grant to purchase Hickman line dry suits to enable children to go swimming; Southampton-based company No Limits, which received £10,000, will train volunteer mentors to work with vulnerable young parents and advise them on day-to-day tasks such as cooking and how best to meet a child's emotional needs; The Parent & Family Care Foundation in Worthing, which received £9,140, will deliver informative roadshows for parents of disabled children; and Beyond Youth, which received £10,000, will develop a pilot project providing coaching in life skills and coping strategies to aid reintegration into society for young mothers in custody at a Surrey prison.

Fiona Dempsie, Big Lottery Fund’s Head of the South East region, said: "There can be numerous barriers which prevent people from enjoying social inclusion in a community, whether it concerns age, mobility or personal circumstances which have led to isolation. I am pleased that many of the awards this month seek to address this important issue and make opportunities more accessible to all."

BIG’s Awards for All programme offers grants of between £300 and £10,000 to social and environmental projects that will benefit local communities and make a difference to the lives of those most in need. Voluntary and community groups, schools, health organisations and parish and town councils can all apply. Visit www.awardsforall.org.uk or phone 0845 410 20 30 for more information.
