Breastfeeding more than one baby at once is just one of the multi-tasking challenges braved by mums of multiple births. Today a Surrey project offering practical support to parents expecting twins, triplets or more, will receive an award from the Big Lottery Fund (BIG).
Guildford-based Tamba, Twins and Multiple Births Association will use their grant of £9,700 to train volunteers to deliver classes to parents expecting multiple births, providing practical ongoing support in acquiring breastfeeding skills. Meanwhile La Leche League of Farnham will use their £7,349 grant to provide training for new mums to become breastfeeding counsellors across Surrey and Hampshire, aiming to establish breastfeeding cafes, where parents can meet socially for coffee and access support.
A total of 43 groups across the region are sharing nearly £365,000 from BIG’s Awards for All programme, with many of the projects using their grants to teach people new skills, ranging from workshops for teenage parents in Crawley, to hiring business experts to mentor voluntary and community sector organisations in East Kent.
Wellbeing is also an important focus for these projects – A £6,914 grant has enabled the founding of a singing group for adults in Chichester, West Sussex, where cortisol and stress levels will be monitored to determine whether singing offers a viable health therapy. Research from the Lavant Road Surgery group will be reported to GPs.
Also receiving awards today are: Be Crafty in Brighton & Hove, which received £9,990 to deliver an enterprise development course teaching NEET young people about market research and tourist-focused product design; YMCA Thames Gateway (South) in Dartford, Kent will use its £9,735 grant to run healthy eating cookery classes for young people who have been excluded from mainstream education; Sharoma Community Project in Kent will use its 10,000 grant to provide accredited courses in literacy and IT for young black and ethnic minority people; Living Faith Resource Centre in Crawley will use its £10,000 grant to provide parenting training to teenage and single parent families; and Shepway Chamber of Trade Limited will use its £9,775 grant to recruit business experts to mentor voluntary and community sector organisations in East Kent.
Fiona Dempsie, Big Lottery Fund’s Head of South East region, said: “Many of these projects may teach fairly basic skills, but they cannot be underestimated for the multitude of vital benefits they offer, such as improving a person’s self-esteem, social life, wellbeing, health, aspirations and even employment opportunities.”
BIG’s Awards for All programme offers grants of between £300 and £10,000 to social and environmental projects that will benefit local communities and make a difference to the lives of those most in need. Voluntary and community groups, schools, health organisations and parish and town councils can all apply. Visit www.awardsforall.org.uk or phone 0845 410 20 30 for more information.
