Cornwall forum to prepare communities for floods through Lottery grant

Area:
South West England
Programme:
Awards for All England
Release date:
21 8 2012

Cornwall is not unfamiliar to flood alerts – torrential rain lashed the county last weekend while much of the South basked in sunshine. Thanks to a grant of £9,750 from the Big Lottery Fund (BIG), Cornwall Community Flood Forum will provide flood management training to 100 local wardens in order to help communities react quickly to the threat of floods.

The project is one of 57 in the South West region sharing over £457,000 of Lottery funding. The organisation in St Austell will also raise awareness among local organisations about flooding and purchase safety equipment such as training manuals, road signs, high visibility vests, sandbags and sheeting and also give people first aid and health and safety training.

With a comparable community focus, the Axminster Awareness Centre in Devon will use their grant of £7,992 to establish a food bank and youth farm resource for people who are facing economic hardship and struggling to afford the rising cost of living.

Meanwhile, Stonehouse Action in Plymouth will create an outdoor art gallery through their grant of £9,934, enabling the organisation to work with residents to get creative and improve the appearance of the local area.

Also receiving funding today is: Imayla C.I.C in Bristol, which will develop and provide recreational outdoor activities for Looked After Children and their carers thanks to their £10,000 grant; and Drastic Productions in Bristol, which will use its £10,000 grant to produce a graphic novel, with stories, profiles and positive images of women to be distributed to health care settings and community centres for women with mental health problems.

Today’s funding comes from BIG’s popular small grants scheme, Awards for All, which offers grants of between £300 and £10,000 to social and environmental projects that will benefit local communities and make a difference to the lives of those most in need.

Mark Cotton, BIG’s Head of the South West region, said: “These projects all reflect an admirable community spirit, pride and a passionate intention to make these areas better equipped to brave economic and environmental circumstances.

“Anyone who has an idea for a community project should visit the Awards for All website to see if a Big Lottery Fund grant could help to get their idea off the ground.
