People living in disadvantaged rural areas of East Cornwall will be able to take part in training courses and improve their skills at a project supported by the Big Lottery Fund, announced today.
The grant of £261,352 will fund the training project led by East Cornwall Council For Voluntary Service Ltd over three years. It is awarded the grant as part of BIG’s Reaching Communities programme, which aims to improve the lives of those most in need and build stronger communities.
From Kilkhampton to St. Austell, the Training for the Future project will offer courses provided by qualified trainers including communication skills, confidence building and group work. It will act as the first step for people entering training for the first time or after a long break, who will then have the ability to go on to further improve their skills in the future at more advanced courses.
Anna Hoyle, Strategic Development Manager, East Cornwall Council for Voluntary Service, said: “East Cornwall Council for Voluntary Service is delighted to report the award of a grant from the Big Lottery Fund for our ‘Training for the Future’ project, which will enable us to provide focused training programmes for people in the rural areas of east Cornwall.
“These training programmes will enable and encourage people from this area to be ready to take part in the opportunities being offered to them by the new Cornwall Council through its localism agenda. The project will better equip people from all communities have a much greater say in the policies being proposed and the services being delivered to them.”
Outreach workers will find out people’s training needs and invite them to attend courses, which will be run at local facilities such as village halls, with course sizes kept to small groups. East Cornwall Council For Voluntary Service hope that the project will equip people living in rural areas and small towns the confidence and skills to get involved in volunteering and to take advantage of accredited training courses in the future.
Mark Cotton, Big Lottery Fund Head of Region for the South West, said: “This project provides a great opportunity for people in rural areas of East Cornwall to realise their potential and will hopefully give them the confidence to go on to volunteer work and further skills training. It is great news for the area and BIG is pleased to be able to support it.”
