Support for the families of addicts, life skills training for young people with learning difficulties, a community environmental website and a cook book for older people are among the 56 West Midlands projects sharing close to £469,000 in Lottery good cause money today.
The funding comes from the Big Lottery Fund’s most popular grants scheme, Awards for All, which offers grants of between £300 and £10,000 to social and environmental projects that will benefit local communities and make a difference to the lives of those most in need.
In Birmingham, Recre8 receives just under £9,500 to run a series of drama workshops to enable young people at risk of offending to gain teamwork skills and improve their confidence, social skills and empathy. The sessions will offer the young people positive and constructive activities to get involved with as an alternative to spending time on the streets.
Anulka Varley, Artistic Director of recre8, said: “This funding will enable the young people we work with to creatively focus on devising their own piece of powerful theatre which will be showcased to an invited audience. Young people will have the opportunity to become involved in all aspects of putting on a performance; aiding teamwork, levels of confidence and improving their acting skills. We are delighted to be able to give these young people this opportunity and we were really impressed with how quickly and easy the Awards for All application process was.”
Also receiving funding this month is Shrewsbury Friends of the Earth, who will use their £2,811 grant to create a website where the community can access constantly updated information and advice on local environmental issues, to help local people lead a ‘greener’ lifestyle. While Warwickshire Social Inclusion Partnership has been awarded £9,800 to bring local disabled older people and mental health issues together and get them involved with creating a cook book. This will involve taking participants on visits to food manufacturers and supporting them to make new friends and learn new skills within a social environment.
Kiddy Pandas in Stoke-on-Trent receives £9,915 to extend the range of sports they offer children with learning difficulties, enabling them to lead a healthy lifestyle and develop their teamwork, leadership and motor skills. It will also enable the children and their families to meet new people and reduce their isolation. While in Sutton Coldfield, £5,796 of funding will enable The GAP to run mentor support and training for young girls to help them increase their self-awareness, confidence and ability to manage any conflict within their relationships.
John Taylor, Head of Region for the West Midlands said: “We want to inspire groups across the West Midlands to get in touch with their project ideas and see how we can help them to make those ideas a reality. The process of applying for Awards for All funding is quick and simple and today’s round of awards just goes to show the variety of schemes that can benefit.”
