Now that the lighter nights are here people across Scotland have even more opportunities to get more active thanks to the Big Lottery Fund (BIG) through their 2014 Communities programme.
2014 Communities funds projects which can introduce all to a wide range of activities and healthier lifestyles in the run up to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. Big Lottery Fund Scotland Chair, Maureen McGinn said: “Today we are announcing grants totalling £122,639 to 122 projects across the country and the wide range of activities receiving money clearly shows how 2014 Communities is helping people to become more active. This programme gives people the chance to explore their potential through all kinds of sport and physical activity. Now that spring is finally here, there’s never been a better time to get active and get ready for a lifetime of sport.”
Thanks to an award of £2,000 to Kids on Bikes, school children in Fort William will have the chance to join an after school and holiday mountain biking club. The money means the group will now be able to train up eight more local volunteers to become qualified, registered coaches. More coaches means that the club will be able to run more sessions during the year and be able to work with even more children in the area.
The University of Glasgow Hockey Club will use their award of £1589 to recruit students to umpire matches. The club currently has a men and women’s team and two indoor teams and desperately needs more volunteers to umpire matches. Training will also include being able to go to National League games across the country to develop their knowledge of the game. The 2014 Communities award also means they will be able to buy new equipment and offer extra coaching sessions in the aim of introducing younger players to the sport.
In Lockerbie mothers and daughters will be able to spend quality time together, enjoying the benefits of a range of physical activities after a grant of £2000 to Lockerbie Academy. The “MAD for It” club will be aimed at girls between Primary Four and Seven and the sessions are specially designed to help the transition between Primary and Secondary school whilst allowing mums and daughters to make new friends.
Isle of Skye Rotary Club will use their grant of £2,000 to organise the Trotternish Ridge Challenge, which will take place on the island on Saturday 29 June this year. The event is open for local walkers and runners of all ages and will include five routes of varying difficulty from walking routes to fell running. The group are also looking for volunteers on the day to marshall each of the routes and to man checkpoints.
JKS (Japan Karate Shotorenmei) Scotland are a Dunfermline based sports group who have a membership of over 400 local people of all ages. After consulting with local people they identified a lack of activities for young people with severe learning disabilities in the area. Now, thanks to an award of £2,000 they will be able to run a series of specially designed sessions and be able to buy the suits and equipment needed to run them.
BIG’s 2014 Communities programme aims to build a legacy from the 2014 Commonwealth Games funding projects that encourage people to take part or volunteer in sport or physical activity or use sport as a way to bring together people from different generations. In total £5.8 million will be invested over the lifetime of the fund, which is recognised as part of the Scottish Government’s Games Legacy plan.

In year two of the programme, Big Lottery Fund has £1 million to award in grants. 2014 Communities will continue to operate up to the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014, but what we focus our funding on and how we deliver our funding may change based on learning leading up to 2014.
