The beginning of autumn usually signals the end of the music festival season for another year. However this month (October) the people of South Lanarkshire have the Biggar Music and Sports Festival to look forward to after an award of £8,180 to Music Events Clydesdale. The group want to use the event as a way of bringing communities together, offering people volunteering opportunities and a chance to know their neighbours better. The festival will be supported by local sports organisations and schools who will be a part of the day. The programme of events includes a cup game between two local football clubs, stalls and refreshments and a marquee with music and entertainment on tap all day.
Libraries in Falkirk will soon ring with the sound of children’s laughter thanks to an award of £8,000 to Falkirk Council Education Services. The group will run a wide programme of creative activities for children from the town who are in care. As well as discovering or re-discovering the joy of reading the young people will also learn about animation, storytelling and film.
Budding broadcasters in the Highlands can now brush up on their microphone technique after an award of £9,828 to Alness Partnership to help them set up a volunteer run internet radio station. The station will be the first of its kind in the area and the group already has a willing batch of volunteers at the ready to fill the airwaves with a wide variety of musical content. Before the station goes live, the group plan to hold a public meeting to recruit even more local volunteers to help run the new programme schedule.
Staff and pupils at a school in Wigtownshire won’t have any excuses not to go and get fit thanks to a grant of £7,447 to Stranraer Academy. The money will allow them to set up a brand new gym in the school which will also be used by the town’s residents after school hours. The group will also run regular fitness sessions for those who need help with their new exercise regime.
An Awards for All spokesperson, said: “All of these grants are a great way to show what a big difference the funding can make to local communities across Scotland. We are always surprised at the varied number of applications we receive and it is fantastic to see that there is still considerable interest in the Awards for All programme. What is crucial to all of these grants is that relatively small amounts of money can make a real difference. We wish all of these groups the greatest of success.”
Awards for All is the small grants scheme supported by three of the National Lottery good cause distributors in Scotland: Creative Scotland, the Big Lottery Fund and sportscotland. The scheme makes awards of between £500 and £10,000 to grass-roots community groups and voluntary organisations.
