BIG welcome for two new board members

Area:
UK-wide
Release date:
19 10 2012

The Big Lottery Fund today welcomes two new faces to its Board as it continues to support communities and people who are most in need. The two new appointments have been announced today by the Office for Civil Society in the Cabinet Office.

Joining the Board are Dr Astrid Bonfield, Chief Executive of The Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust and The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund; and Tony Burton CBE who until recently was the Director of Policy and Communications at The Design Council.

They take up their appointments to the Big Lottery Fund Board on 1 December and will share responsibility for the overall strategic direction of the Fund and delivery of its goals including the Strategic Framework.

Peter Ainsworth, Chair of Big Lottery Fund said: “Astrid and Tony join BIG at a really important time as we face a period of challenge and change for communities across the UK. I am delighted that they will bring their valuable VCS experience to BIG; they join at an important juncture as we develop BIG’s Strategic Framework and roll out new programmes.

“We are sadly saying goodbye to long-standing members Diana Whitworth, John Gartside and Roland Doven who have all made a valuable and productive contribution to our Board since 2004.

“Diana has chaired our International Grants Committee with dedication and distinction. More broadly, she challenged and encouraged us to support awards that demonstrate how excellence can be replicated more widely across the UK. John, who also served as a member of the England Committee, has been a huge champion for the Reaching Communities programme as well as being a leading advocate of programmes that encourage high levels of public involvement, notably People’s Millions. Roland has brought a forensic eye to our efforts to secure positive impact and been a constant champion of funding that achieves outcomes. Our highly regarded Equality Matters strategy owes much to Roland’s influence and he has also been a valued Chair of the Audit and Risk Committee.

“We thank them for all they have contributed and wish them well for whatever challenges come next.”
