What's it all about?

This programme is now closed

Developing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle and access to preventative health services has become more important over the last few years, especially in the wake of growing obesity levels and the increase of mental health conditions such as stress, depression and anxiety. The Well-being programme aims to support the development of healthier lifestyles and to improve well-being.

The programme focuses on three strands: mental health, healthy eating, and physical activity.

Statutory, voluntary and community sector organisations (including social enterprises) and private organisations can apply for funding under this programme. We expect to make no more than twenty awards with most being well over the minimum portfolio size of £1 million. Portfolios should operate at national or regional level.

There are two delivery timetables for this programme. The early application route, which is for organisations who can demonstrate that they have robust portfolios which do not need to be developed, allows funding decisions to be made by the end of 2006. The standard route allows time to develop portfolios and for funding decisions to be made by Summer 2007. Development grants are available of up to £10,000 for development of the stage two applications through the standard route only.

Beneficiary involvement in BIG’s funding processes

The notion of ‘involving people’ has been one of BIG’s core values since our establishment, shaping policy, practice and decisions. We want to continue with and build on our commitment to user participation, and in doing so, ensure we engage with beneficiaries at the most relevant level.

We have commissioned a review of the different approaches that BIG and other funders have taken to involve beneficiaries in their funding processes, and examine the potential and rationale for a more systematic approach to doing this. The report is due in March 2013. Please contact emma.wales@biglotteryfund.org.uk for more information.

New National Well-being Statistics

In autumn 2012 the Office for National Statistics (ONS) began to reveal new data on the nation’s subjective well-being. For the firstOffice for National Statistics time, the Annual Population Survey included four questions to measure people’s subjective well-being.  In November 2012, the ONS published a major report Measuring National Well-Being: Life in the UK which brings together their work on all aspects of well-being so far.  Some of the key findings are:

  • Healthy Life Expectancy has risen in the UK from 60.7 years in 2000-02 to 63.5 years in 2008-10 for men and from 62.4 years in 2000-02 to 65.7 years in 2008-10 for women.
  • One third of people (33%) reported not being satisfied with their social lives, rising to 42% amongst those aged 35 to 44.
  • 8% of people reported not feeling that they belonged to their neighbourhood.

New from nef

nef - economics as if people and the planet matteredThe new economics foundation (nef) has been busy working on the ONS well-being data and has produced a report Well-Being Patterns Uncovered This report explores the nation’s answers to the four subjective well-being questions specifically.

Support for Commissioning

Are you, like many projects, seeking funding through commissioning?  Everyone knows that this can be competitive and challenging.  How can you strengthen your bid?

  • Show the financial value – Producing a Cost Benefit Analysis or Social Return on Investment evaluation for your project can show how much money your project saves for every pound invested.  For example, CLES has recently completed a cost benefit analysis for a voluntary sector project which supports newly arrived migrants in Manchester.  The project manager will use the analysis to support their bid for continuation funding from the City Council.

Take a look at this SROI evaluation of the Changing Minds programme

  • Advice on commissioning is also available on the Well-being website. Have a glance at this report for practical advice on getting commissioned.

Evaluation Methodology

CLES has produced a technical paper describing the full methodology used in the National Well-being Evaluation.  This is something that was requested at the grant holder learning event.  It will be available on BIG’s Well-being evaluation webpages soon and might be useful for you if you want to use the evaluation’s results to promote your project. A word document will also be available via your Funding Officer, if you wish to extract text to use in your own published communications. If you have any questions on this, please contact Jonathan Breeze (CLES) jonathanbreeze@cles.org.uk or Samaah Abdallah (nef) well-being@neweconomics.org

Your grant holders’ event

The grant holders’ Well-being Learning conference will be held again this summer and will be an excellent opportunity to hear the final results from the whole BIG National Well-being Evaluation. The date and location will be announced soon.

If you have any questions or suggestions of important topics that you would like the event to cover then please contact sally.taylor@biglotteryfund.org.uk
