The aim of this programme was to tackle the burden of heart disease, stroke and cancer by improving access to services for patients, and in particular address health inequalities. It provided MRI and cardiac angiography equipment for NHS Trusts, and portable heart monitors and defibrillators for Ambulance Trusts, to enable all ambulance services and hospital cardiac services to reach accepted standards across the country. The programme was developed in partnership with the Department of Health and followed operating principles used for our Cancer Detection, Treatment and Care Programme. Grants were awarded through an allocation process based on an assessment of need using national and local research data.
