About North East England

BIG awards approximately £20 million of vital funding across the North East each year. The North East is the smallest English region in terms of population with 2.6 million people, approximately 5 per cent of the population of England. The sub-regions are the mainly rural Northumberland and County Durham, and the mainly urban Tyne and Wear and Tees Valley.

The North East has the highest levels of deprivation in England, with lower than average life expectancy and higher than average unemployment. BIG awards approximately £20 million of vital funding across the region each year.

Where we are based

The North East team is based in Newcastle upon Tyne.

What we do

The regional team make sure North East voluntary organisations and charities are in a strong position to apply for our funding, and we make sure each area receives a fair share.

The team:

  • monitors local socio-economic and funding data to identify communities most in need and make sure they access relevant funding
  • gives decision-making committees the regional information they need to make informed decisions
  • works with funding advisers and attend funding fairs to encourage strong applications
  • helps grant holders publicise their success and generate support
  • helps projects to work together, create networks, and share expertise
  • informs MPs and councillors of funding successes and issues in their constituency.
